Lawn Care and Cold Weather

By Christina Howard

Weed Prevention

Fall is one of the best times to start weed prevention on some of the most difficult weeds that grow throughout turf and in plant beds. Fall is also a good time to fertilize. At SKB Industries, we apply the final chemical turf application which includes a pre-emergent herbicide and a fertilizer high in phosphorus.

Timing

In colder months, temperatures slow down plant and turf growth which slows down weed control and fertilization movement through the plant and turf. That is why it is imperative to perform these actions before late December and delay any other lawn care treatments from late December until late February depending on the weather pattern at the beginning of the new year.

Aerate & Fertilize

Around November 5th for Georgia would be the first frost date and when we typically head out to aerate and overseed. Aerating your property gives it a chance to breath before the turf goes dormant and helps relieve any compaction that has built up during the warmer seasons.

After aerating, it is also a good practice to fertilize the turf to provide nutrients in preparation for Winter so that the roots may absorb and store the nutrients for a great head start in Spring.  Performing these tasks greatly helps in the prevention of weeds, pests and diseases within your landscape once Spring comes.

Avoid Too Much Turf Traffic

With being a commercial property, it is very hard to prevent foot traffic on your turf, but when your turf is lying dormant or frosted, try to create clearly marked walkable areas for employees or visitors. Even some of the strongest grass can and will become weak after the same path is walked over too many times.

Keeping Your PropertyClean

There’s a good chance, especially during Fall, that leaves areeverywhere on your property and start to collect in the nooks and crannies of your landscape. We know it is important to have them removed at least once a week to prevent the suffocation of your turf. Leaves that are left on the property for an extended amount of time (2-3 weeks) can become very moist and that is a big invitation for diseases to set in. Picking up trash and other debris will also help with the sustainability of your landscape and rejuvenation in the Spring season.
