We Know More About Flowers Than You

Summer in the Atlanta landscape is always very stressful both for the plant material and the landscaper. Atlanta lies on the line where the ³Piedmont meets the plain² and our environs are on the line that delineates Zone 7 to Zone 8 on the USDA map of climate zones. This location provides for a wide palette of plant material that generally may be chosen for the landscape.

The higher the zone number the greater the distance from the North pole so zone 7 is colder than zone 8. This meeting of the climate zones makes for an interesting time in the landscape where you will find a tremendous diversity.

Plants from Miami live next door to plants from upstate Oregon. Cool season grasses such as Fescue and Rye survive right next to warm-seasoned Bermuda grasses, Posies and Centipedes, perhaps all in the same lawn. Although this can be a beautiful thing it does make our job a bit of a challenge because what might be good for one plant from Miami might be the worst thing for the Oregon grown plant.

The professional landscaper is aware of this and will set a program to meet the needs of the landscape. This might range from re-grouping the plants as to water, light or nutrient requirements to making a chemical application to encourage a mono-stand of grass versus a "Heinz-57" yard of fescue, Bermuda and weeds. Your landscape, be it commercial or your own backyard represents an investment that requires maintenance.

The difference in a landscape thriving and just surviving is knowing the essential requirements of your property's plant inventory and tailoring a program to meet the needs of your landscape. Under the SKB program your property is paid a visit by an expert every week of the year to keep a eye on the ever changing environment and to make recommendations to maintain your landscape at its peak.
