Small Firms' Legacy Etched in Profit
Companies with Games work count their money, finance their future
Jess Scheer
Staff Writer

Stephen Bell, whose landscaping firm is doing Olympic work, is anticipating the end of his midnight-to-5 a.m. Olympic shifts and a relaxing vacation.

SKB Industries has done landscaping work at the Olympic stadium and at field hockey and other venues. Bell has seen his profits increase by about 20 percent this year.

The amount of Olympic work, however, has forced SKB to turn down a lot of regular customers. "I don't think our customers will be too mad," he said. "We still have a pretty good backlog."

Bell predicted that next year will be even more profitable as he maintains the venues and catches up with the backlog. More importantly, he said, the closing ceremonies will mark the end of his staff's graveyard shifts repairing and servicing Olympic projects. Bell's No. 1 priority following the closing ceremonies? "I'm going on vacation," he said.

Getting a Piece of Olympic Action
More than 1,500 small firms scored Games-related work

As the Olympics descend upon Atlanta, small companies have a chance to go for the gold. From souvenir-makers to landscapers, more than 1,500 small businesses are contributing to Atlanta's Games.

For some, the process of fulfilling contracts for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games and its contractors was a smooth ride. Others, such as Carolyn Stradley of C&S Paving Inc., traveled a bumpier trail. But for all, it has been the opportunity of a lifetime.

An 18-year-old landscaping firm, SKB Industries Inc. was responsible for planting 150 willow oak trees in front of the Olym-pic stadium, plus similar work at other venues. For CEO Steven Bell, working for the city's larger commercial contractors -- namely Beers Construction Co. and Turner Construction Co. that have contracts with ACOG -- has been a fairly painless process.
